Hero’s Journey

You never know where life is going to lead you. Sometimes what we see as life adversity is really our “Heros Journey”. Think of Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. She wanted more, she felt lost, confused & knew there was more for her to experience. Then, she ventured out on an unexpected voyage. There she landed & fear set in. She was scared & felt all alone. All she wanted to do was to return home. But then, she was brave enough to wander the yellow brick road of life and it was then she met 3 unique characters, had apples thrown out her, flying monkeys pawed & grabbed, a wizard she sought out that did not have all the answers and most importantly a supportive mentor that merely wanted her to figure things out for herself.

Dorothy eventually found her strength & determination. She also learned that it was up to her to find her way home. Metaphorically, Dorothy’s journey was meant for her to find out her true authentic self.  I have wondered what happened to Dorothy after her experience. Did she sit there and stare up at the sky and sing “Somewhere over the Rainbow” again? I think not. I have had a couple Hero’s journeys in my life. Yes, you can have multiple Hero’s journeys. Life throws you all sorts of bullshit! Death, divorce, health issues and confusion about purpose. It is a part of being a human in this lifetime that was gifted to you. The secret is, we need to go through this journey to learn about ourselves and grow. If life was always perfect, we would just be vanilla.  It is a mindset shift that either we can see adversity in a Victim role or as a Hero’s role. I say Hero role, as it gives us a chance to develop a part of ourselves that we never knew existed.  I live my life as mint chocolate chip. I think moving forward Dorothy choose to live her life in color as well.

I urge you to listen to the lyrics to “Somewhere over the Rainbow” again. As an adult, you may find you have a different perspective. “If happy little blue birds fly, beyond the rainbow ~ Why, oh why, can’t I?  Yes, you can my dear, You had the power all along.
